Digiforest Consortium Returns to Evo for Final Field Trials

Jun 15, 2025

From 9–15 June 2025, eight months before the conclusion of the project, members of the Digiforest consortium gathered for one final week of field trials in Evo, Finland. As with the first field trial, Evo Forestry School, managed by Häme University of Applied Sciences, hosted the researchers and provided access to the forest test site.

The week focused on final integration efforts and live demonstrations of the end-to-end forestry pipelines developed within Digiforest. A major milestone was achieved by the teams from ETH Zurich and the University of Bonn, who demonstrated the SAHA harvester autonomously cutting its first tree. At the same time, the drone teams from NTNU and TUM successfully carried out several autonomous under-canopy flights, collecting valuable data in challenging forest conditions.

In addition to the system demonstrations, further maps of the forest plots were recorded to provide longitudinal coverage of the site. These data were later published as part of the Digiforests Dataset, creating a lasting resource from the project’s final trials.

This final gathering in Evo marked an important step toward the completion of Digiforest, showcasing the progress made by the consortium and the successful integration of robotics, autonomy, and forest data collection technologies.
